A dump truck hit and killed a 13-year-old boy in East Elmhurst on Friday morning, police said.
The victim, who has not been identified, was crossing Northern Boulevard at 80th Street a little before 8 a.m when the truck struck the boy. The dump truck driver allegedly fled the scene.
Shortly after, about two dozen police cars had shut down the westward-bound lane of the boulevard between 80th and 79th streets.
“I was the first one out here,” resident Olga Gonzalez said. “I saw the boy already dead. I saw his little hand.”
She said the boy had darted across the street to get something at a corner deli.
Northern Boulevard is a particularly treacherous roadway for pedestrians and would like to see an increased police presence, resident Jane Biernacki said.
“I sometimes run across other streets, but not Northern Boulevard,” Biernacki said. “I feel bad for his mother.”
