Community Board 4 approved a bike corral for 82nd Street in Jackson Heights, after it was requested by a local business collective to alleviate sidewalks crowded by parked bicycles.
The corral will be placed in front of 40-09 82 St., taking up approximately one parking space. Bookended by planters that will maintained by the 82nd Street Partnership, it can hold up to 12 bikes for an indeterminate period of time.
The bike corral does, however, limit the access of street sweepers. The Department of Transportation typically installs the corrals in an area that expresses and demonstrates a need, and has a group that volunteers to partner with the agency to maintain and monitor the site. The 82nd Street Partnership fills that role.
Board members were primarily concerned about bikes abandoned upon the rack. The partnership’s role includes reporting bikes left for an expended period of time to the city for quick removal.
The board voted in favor of installing the rack, 34 to 2.
