New York Hospital Queens will unveil a newly renovated pediatric asthma mobile unit that is providing treatment directly to children at the Queensbridge Houses headquarters of Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement on a part-time basis.

The van renovation and asthma care program are funded by a $326,000 grant from TransCanada through the New York City Economic Development Corporation.

The Riis Settlement is located in an area of Long Island City within “asthma alley,” a region stretching from the South Bronx, through East Harlem and into Western Queens. The area has one of the highest child asthma rates in New York as factories, powerplants and transportation hubs surround it.

A comprehensive healthcare team, including a pulmonologist, pediatrician, respiratory therapist and social worker, from the Pediatric Asthma Center at New York Hospital Queens staff the asthma mobile unit. It will maintain a regular schedule where it is parked at Riis Settlement.

The unveiling will take place on Friday morning.

Welcome to the discussion.
