A drenching summer downpour turned Rockaway Boulevard into a river last Thursday evening.
The sudden flash flood inundated Rockaway Boulevard between 101st and 102nd streets in front of John Adams High School around 6 p.m., at the height of rush hour, shortly after a thunderstorm blew through the neighborhood.
Traffic on Rockaway Boulevard eastbound was backed up as cars tried to avoid the rising water and pedestrians trying to cross Rockaway Boulevard were forced to maneuver around the flood.
A resident who lives on 101st Street said she had not seen a flood at that intersection before.
According to the National Weather Service, only about 0.13 inch of rain fell at nearby JFK Airport on Thursday.
