City Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park) announced today that he is challenging state Sen. Joe Addabbo Jr. for the 15th Senatorial District.

Ulrich first won his council seat in a special election in February 2009, and won a full term that November. In announcing his run for the state Senate, he pointed out that at 27 years old, he is the youngest member of the council, and serves as minority whip for the Republican delegation, which has four members. He is also head of the Mitt Romney presidential campaign for New York City.

"For the past three years, I have been honored to serve the people of my community at City Hall," Ulrich said. "I am now ready to take the fight to Albany where I will be an independent voice for the taxpayers of Queens County. I will be a state senator who never stops fighting for the middle-class."

Addabbo is in his second term. He won the Senate seat in 2008, defeating longtime Republican incumbent Sen. Serf Maltese, and was re-elected in 2010, beating back GOP challenger Anthony Como.
