It took less than 20 minutes to put out a fire on the second floor of a private house at 135-20 120 St. in South Ozone Park on Thursday, the Fire Department said. Fire units responded in less than five minutes, according to a department spokesman. The call came in at 4:42 p.m. and the fire was under control by 5:01.
In total, 12 units and 20 firefighters fought the blaze, the FDNY said. The fire led to the minor injury of a firefighter, who was treated at Jamaica Hospital. But the damage to the house was extensive. It was not known how many occupants where in the house and how they escaped. The cause of the fire in the two-story, two-unit 20-by-40-foot house is under investigation.
The Red Cross also responded to the situation and met with one family who lived in the house, said . The family said they did not housing assistance, since they knew relatives who had space to accommodate them.
