A man was killed and a firefighter was injured in a fire in Richmond Hill on Sunday, according to the FDNY. The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.
The one-alarm fire started at 12:55 a.m. at 103-43 120 Ave. near Liberty Avenue and was brought under control at 1:28 a.m, according to the FDNY. Some 12 units and 65 firefighters responded to the scene.
An unidentified man was found dead in a detached garage behind the abandoned building after the fire was put out, according to a report in the New York Post, which also cited a police source as saying that homeless people are known to stay at the location. The FDNY could not confirm those details. The medical examiner will determine what caused the victim’s death.
One firefighter sustained minor injuries and was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center for treatment. A spokesman for the FDNY said the fire was deemed nonsuspicious, but an investigation is being conducted to determine the exact cause.
