Students at Woodhaven’s PS 97, The Forest Park School, showed off their classroom couture earlier this year.

At a June 2011 meeting, the Parent Teacher Association voted to mandate school uniforms for all students, though not all have taken to the new rule.

“We did not have a great response our first year but we were hopeful that this would catch on and all would come to school in uniform,” said Amelia Joseph, PS 97’s parent coordinator.

To support the uniform mandate, the school held its First Annual Uniform Fashion Show, highlighting the many ways the uniform can be worn. Twenty-three students, above, who were selected by their teachers, worked the runway in the fashion show.

Students who wear uniforms to school regularly were also given certificates of recognition.

Staff members who helped organize the show, Ms. Kearney, top back left, Mrs. Longo, Mrs. O'Connor, Mrs. Joseph, Mrs. Breuer, Principal Mrs. Custodio, Mrs. O'Shaughnessy, and Mrs. Spanos, join students Alex Polanco, front left, William Scurti, Natasha Garcia, Ethan Echevarria, Juliann Belio, Manuel Calle and Aaron Solano after the program.

Welcome to the discussion.
