Lew Simon, Democratic City Council candidate, hospitalized

Lew Simon, the Democratic candidate for the 32nd City Council District, has been hospitalized and will under an angioplasty, his campaign said Friday.

Simon, a Democratic district leader from the Rockaways who is challenging incumbent Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park), went to St. John's Hospital in Far Rockaway Thursday after feeling sick. He was then transferred to Long Island Jewish Medical Center for several tests and was admitted. 

Earlier campaign supporters said he would need a more serious triple bypass surgery, but the severity of his condition was later downgraded.

Simon told the Daily News that he plans on being back on the campaign trail  next week. His opponent sent get well wishes. 

“I wish Lew a speedy recovery,” Ulrich said. “And I look forward to seeing him on the campaign trail soon.”

The election is Nov. 5. The Queens Chronicle is to co-host a debate between the two candidates on Oct. 24.
