A Halloween Spooktacular fundraiser took place in Rockaway last weekend to raise awareness for Rett syndrome, a rare childhood disease. Dr. Aleksandra Djukic from Montefiore Hospital provided information and educated all in attendance about the disease, a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects about 250 children in the tri-state area.
The event, held outside Joe Mure’s Neponsit home, honored Valentina Priola, a 4-year-old with Rett’s Syndrome.
Entertainment was provided by Emerald and Danielle Dante, as well as JV and children’s entertainment couple Patty & Miss Linda.
In total, approximately 300 people attended the event and raised $7,000, which went to the Rett Syndrome Research Trust and the Tri-State Rett Syndrome Center at Montefiore Hospital.
Fazio Dance Center provided entertainment, with DJ Teddy playing music. Scholars’ Academy’s choir and band added their talents. Elmo and Cookie Monster made an appearance. A wicked witch came whizzing through the crowd.
Special thanks to all who donated their time, including Ragtime, Lenny’s Clam Bar and El Caribe for the food and candy; and Jodi Tucci, Juliana Fazio, Raquel Priolo, Carmela Guglielmo and John Taylor for putting together the event. A highlight was the arrival of Batman and the original Batmobile donated from a family in honor of Valentina.
