While the city is still mum on who will be operating the Forest Park carousel in Woodhaven, Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski said the merry-go-round should be up and running by this summer.

Lewandowski said the city and the operator are finishing up “paperwork,” after which the name will be released.

The Parks Department had said it would release the operator’s name in March.

At the end of December, the department issued its fourth request for proposals for the renovation, operation and maintenance of the Forest Park carousel.

Since the 1903 merry-go-round stopped spinning several years ago, many residents and civic groups have been fighting for its return. The Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association recently made T-shirts with “Save the carousel” emblazoned on them.

The structure holds some of the last surviving creations of master wood-carver Daniel Carl Muller, including 49 sculpted horses, a lion, and a tiger.

Welcome to the discussion.
