A man riding his bicycle was struck and killed by a car in a residential section of Howard Beach Wednesday evening; leaving the bicyclist with serious injuries.

The cyclist, Gary Zammett Sr., of Canarise, was riding at the intersection of 84th Street and 160th Avenue shortly after 7 p.m. when he was struck by a car. He was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

Police from the 106th Precinct patrolled 84th Street — a busy two-way thoroughfare through the Rockwood Park section of Howard Beach — Wednesday night, pulling over drivers for infractions such as running stop signs and not wearing seat belts in the wake of the accident.

So sorry to hear about your cousin, my deepest condolances to your family. Unfortunately I did not see anything happen, I just saw the ambulances and fire trucks, and did not stay due to me having my children in the car. I agree something needs to be done regarding a traffic light.

Im a family member of the gentleman struck while riding his bike in Howard Beach.Sad to say he has passed from his injuries and our family is devasted. After visiting the site of the accident we (the family) would like to know how to petition for a traffic light at the intersection where this accident happened. We went to place flowers and say a prayer for our fallen family member and watched several cars blow past the stop signs as we stood there. If no one noticed there is a playground right on the corner and as much as it hurt to lose a member of my family it would be horrific if this were to happen to a child.
