Albert Baldeo, a lawyer from South Ozone Park, has announced he is running for the City Council seat now held by the controversial Allan Jennings.
Although the primary election is not until September 13th, Baldeo, 45, who is from Guyana, is working overtime on his campaign to make sure his voice is heard.
“As an immigrant to this country I went through a lot of problems simply because I was not an American,” Baldeo said. “I want to help other immigrants to avoid hardship and achieve their American dream.”
He hopes to empower the community by bringing economic resources to them, including helping out small businesses.
If elected, some issues he will fight for are improved and affordable health care, more schools, affordable housing and a safer community.
He also thinks the communication between police precincts and their surrounding communities needs to be improved. He will try to organize more meetings with precincts and community leaders in an attempt to create better relationships.
Baldeo, who specializes in immigration, real estate and family law, also practiced law in Guyana before he immigrated to the United States 15 years ago.
He now splits his time between court and the Baldeo Community Center located at 125-14 Liberty Avenue, which he recently founded. The center assists the community with whatever their needs are.
Currently the center is collecting donations for tsunami and Guyana relief efforts. Guyana is currently experiencing severe flooding.
Baldeo says if he does not get elected he will continue to bring to light issues that affect his community.
He is married with one child. “I want to ensure a better future for my son and the upcoming generation.”
“As a lawyer, I have to follow the law and help people on a one-to-one basis, however, as a legislator, I can bring about changes across the board to my entire community,” Baldeo added.
Jennings is the incumbent in District 28. He plans to run for reelection, however, he has had many run-ins with the council ethics committee since he took office.
Jennings has been accused of laundering money and sexually harassing staff members. City Council hearings are currently under way to review these charges.
