Hurricane Sandy may have been a disaster unlike any Howard Beach has ever experience, but some longtime residents note the neighborhood was struck before.

Howard Beach resident Steve LaBattaglia, who lives on 99th Street — one of the blocks hit hardest by Sandy’s storm surge — sent this picture of his home after Hurricane Donna, top, which struck New York on Sept. 12, 1960, and compared it with a photo of the damage from Sandy one year ago, above, 52 years, 1 month and 18 days later.

“My neighbor and I have been in Howard Beach for well over 50 years and we have seen many ups and downs,” said LaBattaglia, who just moved back into his home for the first time since Sandy struck.
