More than 200 library users rallied at the Queens Library branch in Corona on May 24 to protest cuts to the system's funding. The Queens Library is facing a 31 percent cut in the mayor's budget proposal for fiscal year 2013, which starts July 1. Library officials say that if the city funding is not restored, it would mean the layoff of 605 people who provide critical public services; 18 libraries in Queens could close altogether; 30 libraries could be closed four or five days per week; only one library would be open on Saturdays and there would be no Sunday library service at all.

People in Queens would have much less ability to use computers, borrow materials, get homework help, prepare for a new job and enjoy so many other important library services, the Library said in a prepared statement.
