The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Derrickmen and Riggers, Local Union 197, will recruit new ironworker apprentices from July 7 through July 18 — or until it runs out of applications, whichever comes first.

Twenty-five positions are available, and 250 applications will be given out. They can be obtained in person from Local 197 at 35-53 24 St. in Long Island City from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old; have a high school or equivalent diploma; participate in an interview; pass an aptitude test; and be physically able to perform the tasks of an ironworker, as determined by a physical ability test, which include carrying a cement bag, climbing a ladder, maneuvering a wheelbarrow and doing push-ups and sit-ups for three minutes.

Applicants must pay a nonrefundable testing fee of $25 but may request that it be waived for financial hardship.

For more information, interested parties should call the union at (718) 361-6534 or contact the state Department of Labor.

Welcome to the discussion.
