As Hurricane Sandy bears down on Queens, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Mike Bloomberg are asking residents to make last minute preparations.

The storm, which is forecast to be as bad, or worse, than last August's Hurricane Irene, is expected to strike Monday and Tuesday with hurricane force wind gusts, heavy rain and a storm surge with the potential to be as high as 11 feet in some spots. The eye of Sandy is forecast to strike near Atlantic City, NJ late Monday night or early Tuesday morning, which puts New York City in the "right-front quadrant" of the hurricane, the part of the storm with the heaviest rain and highest winds.

Gov. Cuomo announced Sunday morning that the MTA will shut down all subway service at 7 p.m. Sunday and all bus service at 9 p.m. The Long Island Rail Road will also suspend service at 7 p.m. The governor also cautioned against driving and said the city's bridges could shut down if winds exceed 60 mph.

New York City schools will also be closed Monday, the city Department of Education announced.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg has ordered a mandatory evacuation of all residents living in Zone A areas of the city, including the entire Rockaway Peninsula, Broad Channel, Hamilton Beach and Hunters Point in Long Island City. Residents in these areas are to leave by 7 p.m. Sunday. 16 evacuation shelters are operating in the borough. They are located at;
