John Haggerty, the Republican activist accused of stealing more than $1 million from Mayor Bloomberg's re-election campaign, was found guilty of second-degree grand larceny today, Oct. 21, NY1 reports.
He was cleared of the highest charge, first-degree grand larceny, but also was found guilty of second-degree money laundering, as was his company, according to the report.
Haggerty was accused of taking the money he was supposed to use for a ballot security initiative and instead using it to buy a house.
Haggerty's brother, Bart Haggerty, is leader of a Republican faction that has been trying to wrest control of the Queens GOP from leader Phil Ragusa for years. Ragusa's supporters claim some of the Haggertys' activities, such as holding separate meetings and elections for leadership spots, are illegal.
