The two Democratic heavyweights running for the state Senate in Northeast Queens will debate next week.

Sponsored by a coalition of community-based, advocacy and social services organizations, the debate between incumbent Sen. Tony Avella, and former Councilman and city Comptroller John Liu is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 19 at the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel in Flushing. NY1’s Ruschell Boone will moderate.

The coalition sponsoring the debate include the MinKwon Center for Community Action, the Chinese American Planning Council in Queens, the Flushing Jewish Community Council, Korean Community Services of Metropolitan New York, New Immigrant Community Empowerment, the New York Immigration Coalition and the Organization of Chinese Americans in New York.

The race between Avella and Liu is considered one of the most competitive state legislative campaigns in New York. The winner will likely represent the 11th Senate District, which encompasses communities including Whitestone, Bayside, Bellerose, Jamaica Estates and Douglaston.

I have childcare issue, so I can't go to the Debate Forum. But if Queens Chronicle or any SD 11 voters can go to the Debate Forum. Can you ask John Liu at least this question?

Q: What makes John Liu think he is entitled to get a waiver on the $527,000 fine for his 2009 campaign posters, when both Bill Thompson and Bill de Blasio paid their respective 2009 illegal campaign posters of nearly $600,000 and $300,000 to the City Sanitation Dept?

I hope Avella has the opportunity to ask Liu when he is going to pay the fines that were imposed on him resulting from his campaign funding irregularities during an earlier election. Given how very much Liu has raised in funding for THIS campaign, he oiught to be able to pay those fines. And the fines, themselves, were small enough considering that Liu let two of his staffers fall on their swords and go to prison for him instead of serving the time he should be doing, himself. I will believe Liu was not aware of and did not sanction those funding irregularities when I become convinced that Chris Christie knew nothing about the George Washington bridge tie up.
