The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for Roofers, Waterproofers, and Allied Workers Local Union #8 will conduct a recruitment for 20 roofer apprentices from May 5 to 16, the state Department of Labor said Tuesday.

The rules to apply are rigid. Applications can be obtained in person at Local #8, at 12-11 43 Ave. in Long Island City, from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday during the recruitment period. They will be available for two weeks or until 200 have been distributed, whichever comes first. They must be postmarked no later than May 23 to be accepted. Any applicant who misses an appointment or arrives late will be disqualified.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have completed 10th grade. Proof will be required. They also must attest to being able to do the work of a roofer, including having the ability to work more than 50 stories off the ground and to lift up to 65 pounds of material.

For further information, call Local #8 at (718) 361-1169 or contact the nearest state Department of Labor office. Those may be found at labor.ny.gov.

Welcome to the discussion.
