An ex-police sergeant from upstate is likely to get five years' probation for sending sexually explicit messages and images to an undercover NYPD detective he thought was a teenage girl, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown announced Friday.

Patrick Rosney, 53, was a sergeant with 26 years on the job in the Troy Police Department until he retired following his arrest in June 2012. He pleaded guilty in Queens to first-degree attempted dissemination of indecent material to a minor before Acting State Supreme Court Justice Dorothy Chin-Brandt. He is set to be sentenced May 1 and is expected to get probation and a $5,000 fine and be forced to complete a sex offender program and register as a sex offender, according to Brown.

Rosney, using the screen name JoeJazzus1@aol.com, contacted a detective pretending to be a 14-year-old girl from Queens on May 15, 2012, Brown said. He sent the detective messages of a sexual nature and indicated that he wanted to meet in early June "for sexual contact," the DA said. Two days after the first messages, using the name JoeJazzus1@aol.com, Rosney suggested using a website that would allow him to use a webcam. He then posted images that included his face and genitals.

He was arrested June 1 and freed on $30,000 bail.

"It is troubling that a person who was once sworn to protect and serve the public has admitted to prowling the internet for vulnerable young girls," Brown said in announcing Rosney's guilty plea. "This case underscores the importance of internet surveillance initiatives by law enforcement to protect children from sexual predators. Parents shold make it a point to monitor whom their children are communicating with online."
