Another rally was held Tuesday in Willets Point, led by tenants, who must leave their businesses under the mayor’s redevelopment plan for the area.

Marco Neira, president of the Willets Point Defense Committee, organized the protest prior to the All-Star Game, held across the street in Citi Field.

About 100 tenants took part in the event after receiving eviction notices earlier this week saying they have to leave by August. Even though the city project is still going through the approval process, officials say it’s necessary to clear the area around 126th Street to attract people to the area.

The redevelopment plan calls for a shopping mall and garage to be built in the current Citi Field parking lot, with shops, restaurants, a hotel and additional parking on the 126th Street side.

The original plans for affordable housing have been put on the back burner. .

Jamie Ramirez, who owns a small muffler shop there, said the city has done nothing to relocate the businesses. “We want to move as a group, not individually,” he said. “They don’t need to get us out for two years.”

Welcome to the discussion.
