The Queens Housing Coalition is gathering signatures until Feb. 23 to protest the delay of affordable housing at Willets Point.
The coalition believes affordable housing is essential for the immigrant communities surrounding the area and will be delivering the petitions to Mayor Bloomberg.
In 2008, the Bloomberg administration said it would build affordable housing in Willets Point. However, last year it announced that affordable housing would be postponed until 2025 while pushing ahead plans for a mall on the parking lot south of Citi Field called Willets Point West and a hotel at Willets Point.
Every month in Woodside, the tenant-led group holds meetings to raise awareness about the plan. The group held a town hall last month where the Willets Point developers, Sterling and Related Equities, answered questions about their proposal.
In March, the QHC plans to meet with state Sen. Jose Peralta (D-East Elmhurst) to discuss a need for affordable housing in his district.
