Deputy Inspector Jason Huerta, commanding officer of the 111th Precinct, is warning residents to be aware of telephone scams.

Huerta said that criminals are phoning residents and business owners and tricking them into wiring money to them or buying money cards for them.

He offers the following reminders:

• No legitimate utility company will ever ask you to buy a money card or complete a wire transfer to pay for balances on your account.

• Calls from people claiming to be foreign police, lawyers or doctors telling you that your relative is arrested or injured abroad and needs money are scams.

• Whenever anyone claims to represent a company you deal with and is asking for personal information or money, hang up and call the company yourself using the phone number on your bill. Do not call any phone numbers the caller provides.

• Do not withdraw money from your bank for anyone claiming to be an investigator or a law enforcement agent. Legitimate agents or investigators will never request you to withdraw money from your bank.

• Never give your personal information, passwords or account information to someone calling you. Hang up and call the company yourself at their legitimate customer service number.

Huerta said that the elderly, in particular, are being targeted. He urges residents to spread the word in the community about the scams.

“Too many people have been victimized with these scams,” Huerta said. “The 111th Precinct is working hard to keep your community safe. Please do your part to help by spreading he word.”

He urged area residents to attend the 111th Precinct Community Council meetings the first Tuesday of every month, except July and August, at 7:30 p.m.

For further information on crime prevention programs at the 111th, call Police Officer Luigi Galano at (718) 279-5215.

The precinct headquarters is located in Bayside on Northern Boulevard, but takes in Auburndale, Hollis Hills, Fresh Meadows, Douglaston and Little Neck.
