A team of Queens residents placed second out of 15 teams statewide in the EmPower Solar Student Competition.

EmPower Solar, a Long Island-based solar energy company, challenged high school students to create original essay and video submissions answering questions related to solar power and how it fits in today’s energy paradigm.

Jane Jang of Whitestone, Juno Lee of Fresh Meadows, Jeff Kim of Little Neck and Jonaathan Kim from Long Island comprised the second-place team. The friends each received a $400 scholarship for placing second in the competition.

The students will meet EmPower Solar CEO David Schieren and COO Greg Sachs later this month for a business lunch.

“It’s gratifying to see the next generation have such a good understanding of the need for renewable energy in transitioning to a more sustainable economy,” said Director of Construction Education at the Urban Green Council and judge Ellen Honigstock.

The winning team, STATE, was made up of Long Island residents who all won an all-expense-paid trip to California and a $1,000 scholarship each.

Welcome to the discussion.
