Sharon Yeung, center, received the Leonard P. Stavisky Award for outstanding academic excellence during graduation ceremonies at PS 242 in Flushing on Tuesday.

With Yeung are Councilman Peter Koo, left, Sharon’s mother Wen Qing Yang, state Sen. Toby Stavisky and Principal Patricia Costa.

The senator’s late husband, Leonard, served in the state Senate until his death.

A passionate educator, the late Stavisky was a leading advocate on education issues and chaired the Education Committee in the Assembly for eight years before moving on to the Senate

PS 242 also bears his name.

Welcome to the discussion.
