State Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside) was joined on Saturday by Flushing residents at a rally calling on the MTA to allocate funding to change the location of the Q34 bus layover. Avella and residents have been advocating for this for the past few years.
The layover spot is on a narrow two-way street immediately adjacent to the exit of Flushing Memorial Fields. Residents near the Q34 layover location report that the buses are a danger to pedestrians and motorists because the buses travel through and park on the narrow residential block.
In addition, the buses on layover are a considered a serious safety hazard for young children utilizing the playground. In May 2010, a child was hit by a car while exiting the park between the idling buses.
After bringing this issue to the MTA’s attention on multiple occasions, the agency has finally agreed that it is a problem and that a route extension to Francis Lewis Boulevard would alleviate the problem and offer added bus service along Willets Point Boulevard.
However, the MTA has indicated that it does not have the funding needed to implement this extension
