Queens College students participated in a Global Brigades mission to Nicaragua during their winter break to learn about public health and help the needy.

The 28 students began their nine-day mission in San Gabriel, where they worked in a clinic, assisting local physicians and educating children on proper dental hygiene.

In El Limon, the students spent four days building houses and installing eco-stoves, latrines and water-storage units, to reduce respiratory and other diseases among the local population.

“It was humbling to see their living conditions,” said Mamadou Sire Bah, 20, a pre-med junior majoring in anthropology.
