The Queens Zoo has a petite new addition to its home in Flushing Meadows Park.
The zoo announced this week that a female pudu, the world’s smallest deer, was born in May at the facility. She only weighed one pound at birth and as an adult could tip the scales at 20 pounds. She’ll grow to be 12 to 14 inches tall.
Pudus are native to South America. When scared they bark, and they are able to climb fallen trees.
The zoo acquired its first pudu in 2007. They are excellent jumpers and run in a zigzag pattern to avoid predators.
