As of Tuesday, Valentino’s on the Green is no more. The upscale restaurant on the grounds of the Clearview Golf Course in Bayside is now Patrizia’s of Bayside.
Valentino’s opened in 2010, following a $3 million refurbishing by the Friendship Restaurant Group. The group was the concessionaire selected by the Parks Department, which gave it a 17-year lease.
According to a spokeswoman at the Parks Department, the new family-style Italian eatery will have more affordable pricing than Valentino’s.
The operators are hoping the new prices will attract more customers. The terms of the city agreement remain the same.
The restaurant is best known as Caffe on the Green, which operated there under the direction of Joe Franco for 17 years. Although the dining facility was very popular, Parks did not renew the lease because of alleged improper record keeping discovered by the city’s Comptroller’s Office in 2009.
The restaurant was then closed for over a year due to city paperwork and the renovations. It is purported to have been the home of silent screen star Rudolph Valentino and later was the summer residence of Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia. It overlooks Little Bay and the Throgs Neck Bridge.
