A tentative agreement was reached early Saturday between registered nurses and management at Flushing Hospital that averted a strike that was to begin Tuesday.

The contract for the 420 nurses expired at the end of December. The RNs were fighting for continued healthcare benefits without greater contributions from the workforce and an increase in hospital contributions to their pensions, which had briefly been halted.

Details of the agreement will be released by the New York State Nurses Association after the nurses ratify it later this week. Unofficially, however, the deal calls for nurses to pay $25 to $100 a month for health benefits, but they will not have to contribute to their pensions. In addition, RNs will not get raises this year but will in 2013 and 2014.

Hospital officials at the MediSys-sponsored facility confirmed Monday that the three-year agreement had been reached.
