City Councilman Dan Halloran (R-Whitestone) announced Monday he is running for the newly redrawn Sixth Congressional District.
With the support of the Queens Republican and Conservative parties, Halloran said he is throwing his hat in the ring to create jobs, reinforce support for Israel and create energy alternatives to reduce the price of gas.
Halloran, 41, is an attorney who was elected to the City Council in 2009. He succeeded now-state Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside), who that year made an unsuccessful bid to become the Democratic nominee for mayor.
The new Sixth District extends from Flushing and Bayside to Maspeth, Middle Village and Glendale. The Queens Democrats have endorsed Flushing Assemblywoman Grace Meng. She is being challenged in the primary by Fresh Meadows Assemblyman Rory Lancman and Middle Village City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley.
Congressman Gary Ackerman (D-Queens and Nassau) was expected to run, although the reconfigured district is vastly different than the existing one he represents, but last week announced he would retire when his term expires in January.
