The City Council last week voted unanimously to reject a request by an Italian restaurant in Whitestone to add a sidewalk cafe.

The bid by Nonna’s Pizzeria and Trattoria at 22-30 154 St. was opposed by Community Board 7 and was also turned down by the Council’s Land Use Committee a week before the full vote.

“I applaud my fellow Council members for favorably considering my testimony at the Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises hearing and disapproving this sidewalk café both in the Land Use Committee and then by the full City Council,” said Councilman Paul Vallone (D-Bayside).

He opposed the plan, he said, because the restaurant owner did not properly address concerns at the CB 7 hearing and because the community didn’t want it.

CB 7 District Manager Marilyn Bitterman said the outdoor dining would obstruct the sidewalk and add noise and traffic to the mostly residential community.

State Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside) also opposed the plan.

Welcome to the discussion.
