After permit delays and stalled fundraising efforts, the Jamaica Muslim Center finally opened its new school on Sunday at 78-39 Parsons Blvd. in Flushing.
The new Islamic facility, the Al-Mamoor School, will teach approximately 200 students from kindergarten to eighth grade from Jamaica. It’s been in the works for more than two years.
“We want to be a competitive school serving peoples of all faiths and communities,” said Dr. Wadud Bhuyan, chairman of the school. “We hope to expand our programs so we may offer high school education in the near future.”
The site had been empty for many years, after previously having been used as a drug rehab center.
