Since announcing his candidacy last month to oppose state Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside), John Liu has wasted no time in getting endorsements.
Liu, a former Flushing councilman and city comptroller, was selected by the Queens Democratic Party to oppose Avella in the fall primary because the incumbent angered party officials for joining the Independent Democratic Caucus with Senate Republicans to form a majority.
Liu received the support of the Daily Kos, a progressive website. Other endorsements are from unions: UFCW Local 1,500; NYC Coalition of Operating Engineers, Locals 14 and 15; Stationary Engineers, Locals 30 and 94; School Custodians Local 891; NYC building inspectors Local 211; and NY Hotel and Motel Trades.
Avella’s camp issued the following statement: “There is no doubt that Sen.Avella will have strong resources and an army of talent at his disposal in order to help spread his progressive agenda. While the most influential unions have yet to offer their choice, Sen. Avella is focused on completing a successful legislative session.”
