Children’s Librarian Susan Scatena reads “There’s an Alligator Under My Bed” on Thursday to Wally, a 5-foot-long female alligator, and professional reptile handler Erik Callendar before a packed room in the Whitestone branch of the Queens Library.

Scatena promised young readers that if at least 300 children signed up for the summer reading program and collectively read at least 4,000 books, she would read the story to a live alligator.

The final tallies were 344 children enrolled and 4,595 books read.

Callendar, who gives reptile education lessons throughout the tri-state area, told the children that alligators in Florida are no longer endangered because of conservation laws that have been written to protect them.

Welcome to the discussion.
