Youngsters at the after-school program at the Cross Island YMCA in Bellerose last week took part in the National Kick Butts Day by creating their own antismoking posters.
The program was funded by a grant from the Queens Smoke-Free Partnership and was led by the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s director of public health initiatives Nancy Copperman.
The undertaking taught students about the risks of tobacco and empowered them to speak up against smoking. At the end of the afternoon, 40 youngsters performed a rap song advocating not to smoke.
The Cross Island Y also announced that it has implemented a smoke-free outdoor air policy for its facilities and grounds.
