A group of taxi companies serving eastern Queens and Nassau County is offering free rides home from area bars, restaurants and catering halls through New Year’s Day, in an effort to curb drunk driving. They also will give any driver who has to leave his or her car behind a free ride back to pick it up the next day.

Anyone needing a ride should call (516) 326-9090. The participating companies are Ollie’s Taxi & Airport Service, All Island Transportation, Taxi Latino, Luxury Transportation, Glen Belle Car Service and Delux Transportation.

Ollie’s President Marianne Blessinger said the offer is well worth it if it can prevent just one accident.

“We want all or our residents and customers to be safe over the holiday season,” Blessinger said. “During this joyous time of year, our goal is to prevent or stop any horrible tragedies.”

The effort is supported by the Nassau County Police Department, whose commissioner, Lawrence Mulvey, described it as a “generous offer of public service,” adding, “There is no acceptable excuse for DWI with this offer of a free ride.”

An NYPD spokesman declined to comment because, he said, the department is unaware of the initiative.
