A Holy Cross High School football coach and one of his players will receive awards on April 23 at the “Elite Eleven” Scholar-Athlete Award banquet in Manhattan.
Honored for his service to the Flushing school will be Coach Tom Pugh, who will receive the Accorsi Award. Last season, Pugh completed his 41st year at Holy Cross, compiling 212 wins and placing him among the state’s all-time most winning high school coaches.
Brandon Pelzer, a Holy Cross senior, is one of 12 high school students to win a $1,000 college scholarship and plaque. The award is based on achievement on the field, in the classroom and for leadership in the community.
Brandon served as captain of the football team and was among the top players in the Catholic High School Football League as both a linebacker and a running back.
Another Queens senior receiving the honor will be Kevin DeMauro of St. Francis Prep High School in Fresh Meadows.
The banquet is sponsored by the New York City Chapter of the National Football Foundation.
