A founder of the Boy Scouts of America, Daniel Carter Beard, was finally honored for his achievements with a street renaming in Flushing on Saturday at Northern Boulevard and Farrington Street.
Beard, known as Uncle Dan to numerous scouts, designed the scout uniform and founded Troop 1, which still is in existence in Flushing. He lived much of his life here.
Derek Feng, 11, top, a member of Troop 1, rang the spirit bell in Beard’s honor.
Beard’s great-great niece Joan Wing, above, and other family members attended the event. The renaming ceremony was held on Beard’s birthday. He was born in 1850 and died in 1941.
