The lawyer who asked that a case involving his client, Vince Tabone, be delayed, saying it would be unfair to Republican candidates seeking office, has thrown his own hat in the ring to oppose Rep. Steve Israel.

Grant Lally, a Republican from Lloyd Harbor, LI, announced last week that he would oppose Congressman Israel for the 3rd Congressional District seat. The district covers parts of Nassau and Suffolk counties and a section of Queens, including Douglaston, Little Neck, Whitestone and Floral Park.

Meanwhile, Lally has been representing Tabone, a former Queens Republican leader allegedly involved in a federal bribery case with state Sen. Malcolm Smith (D-Hollis) and former Whitestone Councilman Dan Halloran, a Republican.

Tabone is accused of taking $25,000 in a scheme to get Smith on the Republican ballot for mayor last year.

The delaying tactic was issued by Lally’s law partner, Deborah Misir, though she did not mention he was running for office. The judge has not ruled on the request.

In announcing his decision to run, Lally said he wants to lower taxes and repeal Obamacare. He also knocked Israel, saying “No one has been closer to President Obama and his failed healthcare policies than Rep. Steve Israel.”

Lally is no newcomer to Queens politics. He opposed former Congressman Gary Ackerman twice, in 1994 and 1996, losing by 11 percent of the vote the first time and 63 percent to 35 percent two years later.

In 1998, Lally agreed to pay a fine of $280,000 to the Federal Election Commission for accepting illegal campaign donations from his family and lying about it. The fine was one of the largest in FEC history.

His mother is former state Supreme Court Judge Ute Lally.

It is expected that Lally will contest the GOP race with Steve Labate, who ran against Israel in 2012 and has said he intends to face the incumbent again.

Labate is a financial planner who lives in Deer Park, LI. Israel heads the powerful Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Israel’s campaign manager, Isaac Goldberg, issued the following statement regarding the potential Republican opponents:

“The national Republican bosses who shut down Congress have been trying to defeat Steve. All they could come up with is a Republican primary between ultra conservative Steve Labate and a Republican Party hack who paid one of the largest fines for illegal campaign contributions in history.”
