The Hindu Temple Society of North America held its Diwali Festival Sunday at the Queens Botanical Garden in Flushing with brightly colored saris and entertainment to usher in the holiday season.
Traditional music punctuated the crisp fall afternoon program held outdoors. The temple’s new choir sang and there were individual dance performances, henna hand painting, activities for children and holiday food.
Diwali is a five-day Hindu festival held in October or November and is as significant a holiday as Christmas is in the Christian world.
During this festive time it is a traditon to thoroughly clean homes and open windows to welcome Laksmi, the goddess of wealth. Candles and lamps are lit, gifts exchanged and holiday meals prepared.
