Some students with ideas for the new mayor were honored last Friday by state Sen. Tony Avella for their essays detailing them.

With Avella, here, are Sukveer Kaur, left, of IS 172, Ryla Pasaoa of Immaculate Conception School, Carl Smith of Immaculate Conception, Karan Ajmera of PS 191 and Irene Kuang of PS 188. Not shown is fellow winner Shuba Rajagopal of PS 188.

Some of the themes in the essays were universal prekindergarten, healthier meal choices in school cafeterias, smaller classrooms and more afterschool programs.

Winners received a donation from Alma Bank, proclamations and certificates.

Welcome to the discussion.
