A Roosevelt elk calf born at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Queens Zoo has joined the rest of the herd in its woodland habitat.

Born on June 10, the male calf brings the total number of elk in the herd to five. Roosevelt elk weigh approximately 25 pounds at birth. Adult bulls can weigh up to 1,100 pounds, while adult cows can reach 700 pounds.

Roosevelt elk are the largest subspecies of elk in North America. They have distinct coats with a dark brown head and pale brown torso. They range from northern California to southern British Columbia.
