Crime Prevention Officer Anthony Lo Verme of the 109th Precinct in Flushing reminds residents that it is no longer legal to operate an electric bicycle in the city.
The City Council passed the law in April. It went into effect on Monday.
In addition, the new law prohibits anyone selling, leasing or renting such a vehicle. Violations start at $1,000.
Businesses will be held liable for any penalty incurred by an employee illegally operating a scooter on behalf of the business.
Such scooters or bikes have been popular with fast-food deliveries, but the drivers caused numerous accidents hitting pedestrians on the sidewalk.
