Cinco de Mayo festivities were held eight days late this year last Sunday at Flushing Meadows Park, but the wait was worth it as participants got to also honor their moms for Mother’s Day.
The 11th annual event drew an estimated 200,000 people to the area around the Unisphere for music, dance, food and relaxation on a sunny day.
Usually held on May 5, to commemorate the Mexican Army’s defeat of the French at Puebla in 1862, the event plans had to be changed this year because of a Mets game. With the fiesta held on Mother’s Day, a special Catholic Mass was held in honor of moms and was officiated by Monsignor Eugenio Lira from Puebla, Mexico and Father Lorenzo Atto of New York.
Performances were given by Ballet Durango and Ballet Amanecer, cumbia singer Ninel Conde and corridos star Larry Hernandez, among many others.
Visitors relaxed on blankets or hammocks, flew kites and enjoyed traditional food served by vendors.
