The Center for the Women of New York announces its 24th annual luncheon will be held at the Douglaston Manor, located at 63-20 Commonwealth Blvd., Douglaston at noon on April 30.
The theme of the event is “A Celebration of Women in Leadership,” and it is the center’s major fundraiser. The proceeds from the event directly affect programs of the group and will also go toward the restoration of its proposed building at Fort Totten in Bayside.
Some of the major women leaders in the city will be honored. Christine Quinn, speaker of the City Council, and Helen Marshall, the borough president of Queens, will lead off the event.
A special thank you will be given to former Assemblywoman Ann Margaret Carrozza, who served the Bayside area, for her 12 years of work.
In keeping with the theme of the event, awards will be presented to several prominent women including artist and author Constance del Vecchio-Maltese of Middle Village; Democratic District Leader Carol Gresser of Douglaston; and Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz of Forest Hills.
Also honored will be immigration specialist Fior Rodriguez-Langmas, who works in Bayside; lawyer Sybil Shainwald, who works in Manhattan; and state Sen. Toby Stavisky of Whitestone.
A CWNY Service award will be presented to Anita Blank of Bayside, a CWNY charter member. “Good Guy” awards will also be presented to Jerry Iannece of Bayside, chairman of Community Board 11, and James Wrynn of Douglaston, superintendent of the Department of Insurance.
There will be two special awards given in memoriam to Sidney Blank from Bayside who died in 2010, and Edward Jawin of Douglaston, who died in 2008. They will be honored for all the years of support they provided for the Center for the Women of New York.
The luncheon will also pay tribute to the late Geraldine Ferraro, the former congresswoman from Forest Hills, who ran for vice president on the 1984 Democratic ticket with Walter Mondale.
There will be music by William Gati, a silent auction and raffles. The silent auction this year includes an assortment of gift items, art, spa certificates and salon services.
Tickets are $75; corporate packages and sponsorships are available. For more information, contact the center at (718) 793-0672.
