Bayside’s PS 203 takes the Lunar New Year very seriously, and this
year’s celebration on Jan. 18 was no exception.
Students from pre-kindergarten to the fifth grade begin
preparations in September.
Each class learned a song in Chinese and Korean. Parents were major
participants, meeting weekly with school officials to purchase
costumes and plan for the annual event.
There are Asian dances and musical selections presented during the
day plus a special hot lunch for all 750 students. Voula
Angelidakis, the school’s testing coordinator and reading
specialist, coordinated the Lunar New Year program with Principal
Carole Nussbaum. Over 80 percent of the students are Asian.
