Looking to discover what inspires people about Flushing, the Flushing Business Improvement District announced at a smeeting Friday its first photo contest.
Dian Yu, executive director of the Flushing BID, said submissions will be accepted through Sept. 1, either through the mail or by email. No photoshopping is allowed and pictures must be taken within the 11354 and 11355 ZIP codes.

Prizes range from $50 to $400 and will be exhibited at the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel in Flushing following the selection in October.
During the BID meeting, Yu introduced the group’s new marketing director, Charles Kim, who works for Macy’s. Kim said he is looking forward to promoting activities of the BID. “I love to eat and experience things in Flushing,” he said.
Yu reported on the group’s efforts to power wash dirty “hot spots” such as a subway entrance and a stretch of 40th Road off Main Street. The areas are cleaned twice a week, either early or late when there is less foot traffic.
“We want the streets as clean as they are in Japan,” the executive director said.
