A 16-year-old Springfield Gardens resident has been arrested by Nassau County police on charges of first-degree rape, second-degree assault, first-degree attempted sexual abuse and strangulation.

Nassau authorities said Nashane Peterkin of 231st Street was arrested early Sunday morning at a residence in Howard Beach. The Nassau County Police Department said he is a suspect in an Aug. 12 attack on a 30-year-old woman in Valley Stream, LI.

Published reports state he also is a suspect in a rape that allegedly took place in a state park in Valley Stream last month on an undisclosed date.

According to Nassau detectives, the Aug. 12 attack took place when the woman was leaving the Long Island Rail Road’s Valley Stream station.

A man on a bicycle accosted her and grabbed her from behind before she could run away. He caught her, pushed her to the ground and punched her in the face before attempting to rip her shirt off and pin her to the ground.

The victim was able to fight her attacker off, forcing him to flee on his bicycle.

She was taken to an area hospital where she was treated for cuts and scrapes to her arms and legs.

Peterkin was arraigned in Nassau County on Monday. Published reports state he was being held without bail, and that he faces 25 years in prison if convicted.

Sunday’s arrest was the result of a joint investigation by detectives with Nassau County’s Fourth Squad and Special Victims Squad, the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, the New York State Police, New York State Park Police and the NYPD.
